Today's entry will be combination of the stories of my first two weeks in Mallow.

Selesai minggu pertama untuk rotation medicine kat Mallow General Hospital yang lebih kurang 36 km from Cork. Kalau naik bas, lebih kurang 40 minit perjalanan jugak lah. Tapi nasib baik dekat hospital ni ada sediakan single room untuk medical students, jadinya tidur dalam kawasan hospital je la.
So, pengalaman first week untuk rotation kedua ni, memang sangat best lah. Sebab Mallow ni peripheral hospital, so tak sesibuk main hospital macam Cork University Hospital. So sebab tak sesibuk tu lah yang Consultants kat sini memang always make time for medical students untuk bedside teachings.
Bedside teaching ni maksudnya, Consultant akan bawak students pergi jumpa patients and akan suruh students describe about what clinical signs we can see and do physical examination on the patients. And consultants pun memang mengajar banyak lah, walaupun ada yang garang, ada yang suka komen itu ini, tapi after all, diorang just nak kita excel masa exam.
Sebab untuk final year ni, ada 2 main components. Written paper and clinical skills exam. Untuk written paper boleh la score dengan baca all the books and notes etc etc. Tapi untuk clinical skills exam, memang kena hari-hari practise ambik history from patients, examine patients and all.
And then lepas tu kena present the findings to the Consultant. Nak present pun, bukan present gitu je, nak kena impress consultant dengan guna ayat yang concise, tepat and sedap didengar. And it does not end there, Consultant akan tanya soalan itu ini pulak untuk assess our knowledge, kiranya macam exam oral laa.
In clinical skills exam, it is all about do the skills right, have a good basic knowledge and most importantly, make the Consultant feel, "okay this medical student will be a GOOD & SAFE doctor next year,".
Another 2 weeks left before I'm sitting for my long case exam on the last week of my 4-weeks medicine rotation. Semoga cemerlanggg semuanya, ameen

Dua minggu lepas, ada seorang pelajar perempuan lepasan SPM mesej di facebook. Minta pandangan sama ada perlu ke dia buat A-Level, susah ke A-Level and juga menyatakan hasratnya nak jadi doktor. Katanya lagi results SPM nya tidak lah berapa bagus tapi dia dalam proses untuk ulang beberapa subjek dalam SPM akan datang bagi melayakkan dia untuk teruskan dengan A-Level.
Hmmm. Susah nak cakap. Sebab masa before pilih untuk study Medicine pun, banyak ikut kawan-kawan masa MRSM Taiping. FYI, ada 6 orang classmates masa after results SPM nak study Medicine. And I was like, okay study Medicine je lah, sebab taknak ambik Engineering sebab malas nak bother the equation stuffs in Physics, and then taknak ambik Accounting sebab ada bad history tak reti nak balance account masa zaman lower form dulu. So, study Medicine je lah, macam okay je.
Then MARA hantar buat A-Level, susah pada masa itu, memang lah rasa A-Level tu susah yang amat. Memang kiasu all the time, buat past papers etc etc, sebab nak dapat triple A so that lepas cut off point and fly. Itu je. Tapi now, bila dah study Medicine, alahai kacang betul A-Level tu hehe, dah lepas boleh la cakap kan.
Sekarang ni, pejam celik pejam celik, tak sangka final year Medicine dah. The past 4 years have been so tough that Allah lah yang banyak tolong. So, sebenarnya kalau orang kata nak jadi doktor, ada beberapa soalan yang I would like those adik-adik lepasan SPM to ask themselves first:
1. Kenapa nak study medicine?
-My reason at that time because masa tu ayah selalu admit to hospital, and my thoughts at that time, bagus nya kalau dapat tahu what cause the disease and how to manage the disease. Plus, all my elder sisters memang nak ada doktor dalam family. Maka terjun juga study Medicine ni.
2. Rajin baca buku tak?
-In medicine, you have to read a lot and read them again and over again if you have very poor long term memory like myself. And baca je pon tak boleh, sometimes ada benda yang memang kena remember by hearts so kena buat notes which is time consuming. Cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, neurology, renal medicine, rheumatology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry and a lot more tak cukup nak tulis ni haa.
3. Suka communicate dengan orang tak?
-Kita berkhidmat untuk patients. So kena ada good clinical skills and communication dengan patients. And you have to be extra-alert to see what are the clinical signs yang patient ada.
4. Boleh cope dengan super high pressure tak?
-Medical school ada banyak sangat exam. Untuk final year ni, memang setiap 4 minggu exam, setiap 4 minggu exam, so memang pressure je laa every rotation. Plus dengan study loads yang banyak, if you are not handling it very well, you may get "mental" because of studying medicine. I'm not joking about this sebab ada few cases of depression among Malaysian students here.
Anyhow, here I am in final year of medical school, Alhamdulillah.. The core thing in Medicine, you want to make the patient feels better and their health status get better. Jadi, itu lah yang best nya to be in this field, you help other people to achieve a better quality of life despite of their illnesses.
Although sekarang pun cuma medical student, but the least thing I can do is always give a big bright smile to them whenever I take history and examine them. The smile is not only good for the patients, but actually good for ourselves juga sebab banyak studyloads and workloads, hehe. smile emoticon
And yang paling stress untuk minggu ni bila Dr Cronin bagitahu ada 2 out of 4 of us yang akan buat long case exam minggu depan which is supposedly due on the next 2 week lagi. So tak tahu la siapa 2 orang yang bertuah, so weekend ni memang keeps the head up and terus je la study, sorokkan anxiety jauh-jauh and stay focus. Mohon doanya dapat excel long case exam.
Untuk yang bukan medik, long case exam ni maksudnya dalam tempoh 45 minit, examiner akan bagi satu patient and kita kena ambik history dan buat physical examination yang sesuai kat patient. Lepas tu kena present the case dekat examiner, come out with at least 3 possible diagnosis untuk patient tu, investigation dan jugak management. Gituhaa. Jadi sekarang hanya mampu doa Allah mudahkan lah semuanya. Study dah study dah, harapnya tak blank.

Hye awk! Sy dah follow awk lama dah.
Sejak drp awk belum pergi ke cork lagi.
Dulu selalu baca entry2 yang ada.
Sekarang jarang2 sebab kekangan masa.
Tengok perkembangan awk drp dulu sampai sekarang rasa macam.....
Cepat je masa berlalukan?
Dah 4 tahun dah.
Susah senang, penat jerih, jatuh bangun kita hanya Allah yang tahu.
